Mommy Makeovers – Plastic Surgeons Explain Your Options

Mommy makeovers are more popular than ever.  A mommy makeover is a combination of plastic surgery procedures that generally includes a tummy tuck, breast augmentation and in most instances liposuction.  Many women choose to consult with a plastic surgeon post-pregnancy, as a mommy makeover, when performed by a skilled plastic surgeon, can effectively address the effects that pregnancy, childbirth, and breast-feeding can have on the female body, particularly on the breasts and abdomen.  Mommy makeovers typically involve plastic surgeons performing a tummy tuck as well as some from of breast surgery, generally a breast lift, breast augmentation, or a breast lift/augmentation using silicone or saline breast implants.  Many plastic surgeons offer their mommy makeover patients the option to also have liposuction surgery performed as part of their procedure, to address any unwanted fat deposits.
Right for You?   A woman’s body changes, sometimes very drastically, after pregnancy.  Mommy makeover surgery is often sought out by women who want to reverse the toll that motherhood can take on their body, especially after diet and exercise is not enough.  A mommy makeover isn’t just for women who have recently given birth, as plastic surgeons often perform the procedure on their patient’s years after pregnancy.

Breast Lift and Breast Augmentation
Many women become unhappy with the size and shape of their breasts post-pregnancy, and after breast-feeding.  A mommy makeover can include several types of breast surgery, including breast augmentation, breast reduction, and lift or mastopexy surgery.  A breast-lift can address the post-pregnancy sagging referred to as “ptosis” which results from fluctuation in the size of the breasts, and the loss of volume.  Breast sag is one of the most common complaints heard by plastic surgeons, and can be effectively treated  with mastopexy surgery, with or without the use of implants, as many plastic surgeons use a patient’s own tissue to restore lost volume in the breasts.
During pregnancy, the skin and muscles in and around the abdomen stretches considerably, which can cause women to have a more distended, bulging, and looser stomach, when compared to their pre-pregnancy body.  As part of a mommy makeover, tummy tuck surgery, referred to by plastic surgeons as abdominoplasty, is performed to remove excess skin and tighten the underlying abdominal muscles, which results in a more shapely, firmer and flatter abdomen.
Combining Plastic Surgery Procedures   Plastic surgeons look at a patient’s age and overall health status to help determine whether or not one is a candidate for a mommy make over, and if the tummy tuck and breast surgery procedures can be combined in one surgical procedure.  If it is determined that a patient can undergo both procedures at one time, the benefits can be great, as a woman will only have to recover from one surgery, which also minimizes the number of instances that she will have to go under general anesthesia.

Plastic Surgery For Mom   Many times, mothers put their children’s needs above their own and in turn, tend to neglect their own needs and desires.  A mommy makeover can drastically enhance a woman’s self esteem and self image.  Today, plastic surgeons offer more advanced plastic surgery techniques that can allow for the best results, with a short recovery, allowing mothers to return to their normal lives and their families seemingly faster than ever before.
