Breast Reduction Surgery
Dr. Daiza consults with many women who are interested in having what is known as “breast reduction” surgery. A breast reduction is often the best option for women with disproportionately large breasts. Chronic neck and back pain is a common issue that women with large breasts often suffer with, which can impact their quality of life.
Some estimates show nearly 100,000 breast reduction procedures performed each year, making it far more common than ever before, with patients who undergo surgery reporting extremely high satisfaction rates.
Is surgery right for you?
There is a fairly common list of issues that women with larger breasts suffer from. If any of these issues affect your daily life, you may want to consider surgery.
-Back, neck, or shoulder pain -Embarrassment or self esteem issue -Uncomfortable in clothing and bras – Painful rashes below the breast -Noticeable marks as a result of bra straps
Many candidates for breast reduction surgery believe that because it is an elective procedure, it is not covered by insurance. This may not be true. In fact, many women are able to demonstrate that they actually need the surgery for their health, and this may warrant your carrier to cover the breast reduction surgery. However, keep in mind that when insurance covers breast reduction surgery, it may be required that the breast be reduced to a certain size.
Preparing for surgery:
It is imperative to be completely informed about your surgery. Most women have one or more consultations with their plastic surgeon before undergoing breast reduction surgery. Make sure you ask any and all questions you have prior to surgery. Post-op:
It is common for women who have undergone breast reduction surgery to experience soreness for days or even weeks after the breast reduction surgery. Some women will require drainage tubes after surgery. Doctors may require that these tubes be kept in place for several days to even a few weeks after the breast reduction surgery.
Breast sensitivity may continue for a few weeks following your procedure. Most women return to work within weeks of surgery.
Considering all of the pros and cons of breast reduction surgery will help you determine if it is right for you. Make sure to meet with a board certified plastic surgeon for a consultation even if only considering breast reduction surgery, as doing so can help you make the best decisions for your individual needs.
