Is LAP-BAND® Surgery Right for You?

Every where you turn these days in the news and the media it seems that people are obsessed with the fad of weight loss. But for millions of Americans who really struggle with their weight and the health problems associated with it, becoming fit and healthy is not as easy as the newest fad diet. For some, regular diet and exercise may simply not be enough to get the weight under control and start you on a new road for a healthier lifestyle. For those people this is where weight loss surgery, sometimes called bariatric surgery, comes in at. There are different types of procedures available, but one of the most popular is the LAP-BAND method.

The LAP-BAND method is designed to help you loose weight in a gradual way that is manageable and safe by using an Adjustable Gastric Banding System which slowly reduces the amount of food that your stomach is able to hold. The surgery is performed by laparoscopy, making it minimally invasive, yet allowing bariatric surgeons to place a small silicone band around the upper portion of the patient’s stomach.

One of the many reasons that LAP-BAND surgery is becoming a preferred form of bariatric surgery, by many weight loss doctors, when compared to other forms of weight loss surgery, such as gastric bypass, is that in many cases, Lab Band surgery can be performed on an outpatient basis since it not nearly as invasive as gastric bypass, as it does not require any major surgery on the stomach or intestines. Doctors and patients alike also prefer the fact that lap band surgery requires smaller incisions, less scaring, and shorter recovery time, as well as a lower rate of complications after surgery. Statistics also show that patients generally have less pain and fewer side effects with the LAP-BAND procedure, and if need be, the band can easily be removed if the patient so chooses.
